Plot Overview
Set many years after the events of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair introduces new protagonists, Eustace Scrubb (now more mature after his transformation in the previous installment) and his schoolmate Jill Pole. The story begins at their dreary boarding school, where the two are transported to Narnia by Aslan, the great lion, and given a mission: to find Prince Rilian, the missing son of King Caspian X.
Their journey takes them across treacherous landscapes, including the desolate moors of Ettinsmoor and the eerie Underland, ruled by a sinister witch. Along the way, they are joined by Puddleglum, a pessimistic but loyal Marsh-wiggle, whose cautious nature balances the courage and determination of the young heroes. Together, they confront physical and moral challenges, learning the importance of trust, perseverance, and following Aslan’s guidance even when his signs seem unclear.
The climax of the story pits them against the manipulative Lady of the Green Kirtle, whose enchanting powers have kept Prince Rilian captive. The resolution not only restores Rilian to his rightful place in Narnia but also serves as a powerful metaphor for breaking free from spiritual and psychological bondage.
