Show Notes

0:00: Justin and Helen immediately get into the news of the past few weeks, which involves a number of Japanese voice actors speaking out about an AI voice service using voices without authorization.

2:53: The two hosts then discuss CODA going after a number of piracy sites, which seems more extensive than usual!

4:33: TOHO’s plan is now being executed, as they now have acquired a 6% stake in Makoto Shinkai’s CoMix Wave Films and they’ve acquired GKIDS! Justin and Helen wonder what this all means, especially for the North American anime industry.

8:32: There will be much to talk about regarding announcements from New York Comic Con, but the two hosts first get into awards and honors that happened over there! Delicious in Dungeon won a Harvey Award for Best Manga, while the late Akira Toriyama was inducted into their Hall of Fame.

10:27: Normally if you see a hiatus/break for a manga it’ll probably be legit, but for Deadpool: Samurai and those creators, we’ll have to see if it’s legit! At least we do know One Piece is on a break, for at least the next few weeks; Battle in 5 Seconds, which is heading to its conclusion, will be on hiatus for a few reasons; and Toshinori Sogabe’s Yankee JK Kuzuhana-chan will go on hiatus due to poor health.

14:06: The two hosts discuss the current arc of One Piece taking a break until April, which gets Justin to again wonder just what the state of the anime industry is if this has to take a break for likely health and quality concerns.

17:07: Voice actor Tessho Genda is now back after three months due to health; Manga creator Uru Okabe revealed a real health scare on Twitter that was definitely life threatening, but they’re safe.

18:16: Kazuhiko Mido passed away at 62 due to esophageal cancer; Ocean Studios dub narrator Doc Harris passed away at 76; and Anime background artist, art director, and the GAKIproAstudio art studio’s board director Yukihiro Shibutani passed away at 63 last month.

19:22: Justin and Helen discuss the loss of Nobuyo Ōyama, who was the original voice of Doraemon, and the people who took time to send their condolences and how she’s impacted them in their career.

Licenses

21:50: The two hosts jump right into the non-NYCC licenses over the past few weeks, this from Seven Seas: Tokyo Revengers: Brilliant Full Color Edition, Tokyo Revengers Series Guide, IDOL x IDOL STORY!, 10 Things I Want to Do Before I Turn 40, Natsume Wants to be Trained!, Virgin Marriage: A Maiden Voyage into Passion’s Embrace (Steamship), My New Boss is Goofy, BLACK BLOOD, The Long Summer of August 31, SEX DRIVE (Steamship), Fairy Cat; and then we have a Manga Planet announcement! Streaming News

38:02: Planetes and the latest Blue Lock film are now on Crunchyroll; meanwhile 4 more Macross anime have been added to Disney+…but these are still only in Canada! Helen just continues to be flabbergasted about its rollout.

39:08: Meanwhile, Netflix is slated to remove Glitter Force and Glitter Force Doki Doki from its service November 9, which only gets the two hosts to speculate on when the original versions will appear on Crunchyroll; they will also add Her Blue Sky to their service.

40:18: Finally, a late entry to the Fall anime streaming game, Haigakura will be available to watch on YouTube and Amazon Prime.

Main Topic: Fall Anime 2024 First Impressions

41:36: The two hosts discuss the Fall anime season, which is again so massive and has some interesting shows that they both still have a few more anime to watch! But a few highlights include Ranma 1/2, Nina the Starry Bride, Magilumiere, and Dragon Ball Daima amongst their watch list, with still more they want to try (Justin however is intimidated about catching up to Re:Zero Season 3 though)

Weird News

:: We’ve seen things end for normal reasons in Japan, but an Iruma-kun spinoff ending due to YouTuber reorganization issues? That’s crazy.

:: Let’s just say someone found out what happens when the Ranking of Kings creator discovers your tweet about calling him a pedo and a right-winger, and yeah it involves lawyers.

:: What happens when your voice actors from a show in 2019 become much more popular by 2024? You get Demon Lord, Retry! R, which, while the creator explains that scheduling conflicts were one of the reasons there was recasts across the board, money is more likely to have been the reason they could only get the main lead’s role back. Ranma 1/2 capital? Demon Lord, Retry! R definitely does not have that!

:: Kodansha’s Young Magazine announced as part of their 45th anniversary campaign that they will publish a US edition in the summer, which seems interesting, but Helen’s a little skeptical!

:: And finally, growing up Gonzo was a name everyone knew, but time has not been kind to them, and they’ve now resorted to working on something very cursed.
